THE CUCKOO.-It was thought by many that the cold weather which had so long prevailed had effectually barred the advent of the cuckoo. It is reported on reliable authority that the cuckoo was heard in the Happy Valley early last week [21 Ebrill?]. This is not to be wondered at, because this valley is a favourite haunt of birds of song. Many years ago a nightingale honoured Bodtalog Wood with its presence and large numbers of people went to hear it.

...expedition by train to Lappworth in search of wild flowers..gathered primroses Cowslips, Ox-slips, Cuckoo-flowers, Strawberry Anemones, Early purple Vetch, White Violets, Dog Violets, Wood Sorrel, Moschatel, Lady's Mantle, Blackthorn, Bullace, Corn Crowfoot and Common Lesser Sedge and Daisies...there was no trace of any blossoms of the Sweet Purple Violet; I found a number of the white ones so conclude they flower a little later than the purple. The wild Pear was just ready to break into blossom and the buds of Hawthorn were very large.

Nightingales are unusually numerous in Wales this year. Hundreds of people went their way to the Lasgarn Wood near Abersychan, each night to hear the nightingale at midnight. On Saturday night [12 Mai 1906] several hundreds visited the neighbourhood, and the village was all alive with visitors until day-break. Strange to say, this is the exact spot where the cuckoo was first heard in the valley some six weeks ago.
